Hair Texture
Inherited trait
Hair Texture
Hair texture runs from straight to coily. Coily and curly are dominant over wavy and straight, so straight hair only appears when a child inherits it from both parents.
Dominant to recessive
Coily
Dominant
No extra shades - it's on or off
Shows up if even one parent passes it on.
Curly
Middle
No extra shades - it's on or off
Shows when no more-dominant version is inherited.
Wavy
Middle
No extra shades - it's on or off
Shows when no more-dominant version is inherited.
Straight
Recessive
No extra shades - it's on or off
Both parents must pass it on for a child to show it.
What will my child inherit?
Coily is dominant: a child shows it whenever at least one parent passes on the gene.
Straight is recessive: a child only shows it when both parents pass it on.
Two Coily parents can still have a Straight child - if both quietly carry the Straight gene, it can surface.
Two Straight parents always have Straight children.
