Inherited trait

Face Freckles

Freckles are a single on-or-off trait. Having freckles is dominant - one parent passing them on is enough - so freckle-free children need both parents to lack them.

Dominant to recessive

Freckles

Dominant

No extra shades - it's on or off

Shows up if even one parent passes it on.

No freckles

Recessive

No extra shades - it's on or off

Both parents must pass it on for a child to show it.

What will my child inherit?

Freckles is dominant: a child shows it whenever at least one parent passes on the gene.

No freckles is recessive: a child only shows it when both parents pass it on.

Two Freckles parents can still have a No freckles child - if both quietly carry the No freckles gene, it can surface.

Two No freckles parents always have No freckles children.
