Weather

Four weather states cycle across the islands - each shifts solar output, crop growth and airship handling.

Weather state

Clear

Blue skies and full sunlight. Solar panels run at 100% during the day, crops grow normally, and airship flight is smooth. The best conditions for building, farming and exploring.

  • Solar: Maximum
  • Wind: Varies
  • Crops: Normal
  • Flight: Smooth

Weather state

Cloudy

Overcast skies cut solar output to about 70%. Crops are unaffected and visibility stays good.

  • Solar: ~70%
  • Wind: Varies
  • Crops: Normal
  • Flight: Good

Weather state

Rain

Steady rainfall fills farmland water storage automatically, so crops water themselves. Solar output drops to about 10%.

  • Solar: ~10%
  • Wind: Varies
  • Crops: Auto-water
  • Flight: Tricky

Weather state

Thunderstorm

The most severe state. Storms only roll in when wind intensity is high, and fully grown crops standing in open wind can be destroyed. Solar drops to almost nothing while the high wind drives windmills near their maximum. Dock and wait it out.

  • Solar: Minimal
  • Wind: High
  • Crops: At risk
  • Flight: Risky

Automation

Weather Sensors

Two sensors react to weather conditions and feed signals into the energy grid for automation.

Rain Sensor

Outputs a signal while it rains and a double-strength signal during thunderstorms. Wire it to sprinklers to disable irrigation during rain.

Daytime Sensor

A simple day/night switch: positive signal during the day, negative at night. Perfect for automating lights or routing power between day and night systems.

Devices

Weather Station

The Weather Station is a placeable device that displays current conditions and wind data. Its display shows wind angle and intensity with a dynamic indicator. Place one on your base to read the wind and plan airship flights around incoming storms.

Guide

Weather & Energy Planning

Smart base design accounts for all four states. Pair solar panels with windmills and batteries so your grid stays powered through storms. Use the daylight and rain sensors to automate lighting and irrigation. Crops need open sky (or a glass roof) to grow, and a wall or greenhouse that blocks the wind protects them from storm damage.

Frequently asked

  • How does weather affect gameplay in Solarpunk?
Weather shifts between Clear, Cloudy, Rain and Thunderstorm. Solar output scales from 100% in clear skies to about 70% under clouds, 10% in rain and almost nothing in a storm. Rain fills farmland water storage automatically, and thunderstorms can destroy fully grown crops that are not sheltered from the wind.
  • What do weather sensors do?
The Rain Sensor outputs a signal during rainfall and a stronger one during thunderstorms - wire it to sprinklers to disable irrigation when it rains. The Daylight Sensor is a day/night switch: positive signal by day, negative at night. Use it to automate lights and energy routing.
  • How do I protect crops from storms?
Storm damage hits fully grown crops standing in open wind. Anything that blocks the wind protects them - a greenhouse works, and so does a wall on the windward side. Crops still need open sky or a glass roof above them to grow, so a greenhouse with a glass roof is the safe option.
